About the Artist

BIO

As a creator, Lorraine Ledger produces works on canvas and paper from her imagination, informed by experience (and an occasional photograph).  Whether producing words or pictures, her goal is to inspire moments of empathy and reflection that promote communication and knowledge.

Lorraine’s open-hearted sense of adventure has led her down some of life’s less-travelled roads, both literally and figuratively. Her art in its many forms features classic themes of beauty, truth and humanity.  She reminds the viewer to practice seeing. Lori (as she signs her paintings) began teaching herself to paint around 2005 while running her own web design agency in Georgia. Creating websites for other artists inspired her leap into a full-time arts career.

Lorraine Ledger was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and currently lives near Austin, Texas. She previously lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and has road-tripped to more than 30 U.S. states and Canada. She’s a graduate of Pepperdine University, with degrees in sociology and administration, and is currently completing her doctorate at University of the Cumberlands.  Lori’s work experience is diverse and includes everything from professional singer to book publisher, college administrator and web designer. A desire to be near aging parents and grandparents brought her to Texas in 2013.

She’s a familiar face at many popular local art shows, festivals and exhibits in and around Austin, Texas. Memberships have included the Artists Alliance of the Hill Country and San Marcos Art League. Since early 2021, she has served on the Program Committee for SMAL, reviewing proposals and helping establish new educational and outreach initiatives for the membership and community. In Fall 2020, Lorraine expanded her repertoire to include freelance work in Learning & Development and instructional design.

STATEMENT

I paint and I write…and sometimes I make music and build things. Whatever art form is handy to express and explore my feelings in some tangible communal way, I’ll likely try at least once. For me, most creative experiences satisfy a similar need for deep concentration and saturation in something outside myself. I enjoy the intellectual process of finding the right word for a metaphor equally with the physicality of applying paint and making shapes on a canvas.

Sitting at the desk or easel, I usually work for long stretches–hours—without a break. My muscles ache and I’m thoroughly spent when I finally quit for the day. When I paint, I get into color moods. Today green, tomorrow orange. There are days when, no matter what subject I’m painting, I just can’t stop for the day until I put some orange in there. It’s the same with writing. Certain words flash into my head and I have to fully explore them–connotation, history, subtext.

When all is said, sung, painted, or otherwise done, I guess I hope a new thing has come into the world–something unique, something nobody else could have done but me; some thing that gives pleasure or pain, that forces my personal perspective into the world, a little piece of me left behind when I’m gone.
